Kensico is offering free walking tours of the Kensico grounds during the second and third weeks of May. All tours run from 5:30PM to 7PM and each covers about a half-mile section of the cemetery.
The Ossipee Loop Tour will be offered on Tuesday, May 9 and Thursday, May 11. Highlights include a baseball legend and his boss; two inventors; a movie theatre mogul; a World’s Fair mystery; a controversial circus connection, a scandalous scofflaw, a Sentimental Gentleman, a Broadway angel, and one good witch.
The Tower Loop Tour will be offered on Tuesday, May 16 and Thursday, May 18. Highlights include a subway surprise, a silent film director, two sculptures hidden in plain sight, a Titanic mystery, a Hungarian dessert, a runaway horse, a vehicle that was awarded a Purple Heart, and a tribute to Twinkies.
The tour guide is Patrick Raftery, Associate Director/Librarian; Westchester County Historical Society, and a board member of The Friends of Kensico, Inc.
The tours are free, but reservations are required by emailing events@kensico.org indicating tour date choice. Directions and details will be included in the confirmation email.
In announcing the tours, Kensico President Matthew G. Parisi said, “Our Walking Tours are our way of encouraging our neighbors to know and appreciate, as we do, the fascinating stories that deserve to be discovered throughout our beautiful grounds.”
